Anthony Albanese says he wants to terminate the lease agreement on the site where the proposed embassy is located
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday he would introduce a bill to end a lease agreement for a piece of land where Russia plans to build a new embassy complex in Canberra.
“The administration has received very clear security advice about the risks posed by Russia’s new presence so close to the Capitol,” Albanese said. “We are moving quickly to ensure that the leased location does not become an official diplomatic mission.”
The prime minister added that he expected the legislation to be passed by both houses of the country’s parliament, the House of Representatives and the Senate, later on Thursday.
