Gunman ambush family in South Africa, killing 10 | Crime News


South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with approximately 20,000 murders recorded each year in a population of 60 million.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a homestead and ambushed a family in the South African city of Pietermaritzburg, police said, killing 10 people.

Police did not give a motive for the shooting. The police department said in a statement that the victims included seven women and three men.

From 1 July to 30 September 2022, more than 7,000 people were murdered in crimes reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Nearly 1,000 women will be murdered during 2022. More than 13,000 women were also victims of assaults intended to cause grievous bodily harm and 1,277 women were victims of attempted murder.

Following a spate of mass shootings last year, the gunman killed eight people and wounded three others at a birthday party in the Eastern Cape city of Gqeberha in January.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and top executives from the South African Police Service are due to visit the crime scene of the latest shooting later on Friday.
