A landslide has struck an area near the Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing at least two people and injuring several others.
Islamabad, Pakistan – A massive landslide in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least two people, injured eight and buried several cars, officials said.
The landslide occurred early Tuesday near Tolkham, a key border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Bilal Faizi, spokesman for the province’s Rescue 1122 service, told Al Jazeera: “Rescue officials were informed before dawn that after rain and thunderstorms, a landslide occurred near the Tolkham border and many trucks and containers were buried.”
He added: “So far, we have rescued two dead and eight injured, four of whom have been taken to hospital.”

Authorities have launched a search operation for people trapped under the landslide, Faizi said. He said there may be more than 20 vehicles, including large trucks, under the rubble.
“This is not a small landslide that can be cleared quickly. We have over 60 people working here to remove the rubble. It’s like a whole mountain has collapsed,” he said.
The Tolkham crossing was closed for more than a week in February amid tensions between Pakistani and Afghan authorities amid border clashes.
