The European Parliament has passed a draft law to check the threats posed by artificial intelligence.
The world is undergoing an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution that is changing the way we live and work.
But the rapid growth of artificial intelligence has also attracted global attention. Are our jobs under threat? Does it create disinformation? Does it amplify bias and misinformation?
All of us — and our governments — are grappling with these issues.
The European Parliament has taken the first steps to address these issues. It has already passed a draft of what will be called the Artificial Intelligence Act.
The legislation would ban systems deemed to pose an “unacceptable” risk to human life.
However, this could bring European governments into conflict with US tech giants investing billions in artificial intelligence.
There are concerns that regulation will stifle creativity.
