Eight people were killed and seven were injured Saturday afternoon when a man opened fire at a mall in Allen, Texas, officials said. The suspect was shot dead by law enforcement officers.
The attack took place at the Allen Premium Outlets, a large shopping mall in the northern suburbs of Dallas. An officer was on an unrelated call when he heard gunshots, police said. “Officers engaged the suspect and neutralized the threat,” Allen Police Department said in a statement.
Nine victims were taken to the hospital, but two succumbed to their injuries, Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd said.He added that three “He is undergoing critical surgery and four others are in stable condition.”
According to a video and photos shared on social media, the shooter was identified as male and was wearing black clothing and sunglasses during the attack. CNN reported that he appeared to be armed with an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle with several magazines and was wearing body armor.
“Today is a tragic day for the City of Allen, our citizens, our friends and visitors to the Allen Premium Outlets,” Allen Mayor Ken Fulk said. “Allen is a proud and safe city, which makes the senseless violence today all the more appalling.”

The tragedy comes a week after a man shot and killed five neighbors in Cleveland, Texas. After four days of manhunt, the suspect was captured.
In March, six people were killed in a mass shooting at a Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee. Police arrived at the scene and shot and killed the attacker.
