Multiple U.S. government agencies under cyber attack – CNN — RT World News

“Some” U.S. government agencies have been the target of an ongoing global hacking campaign, CNN reported Thursday. While Wasington did not comment on who was to blame, Russian-speaking groups have been responsible for similar intrusions in recent weeks.

US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency “Support is being provided to several federal agencies that have experienced breaches,” An agency official told the ABC. “We are working urgently to understand the impact and ensure timely remediation.”

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack or how many institutions were affected.

The attack is the latest in a string of hacks targeting Western companies, universities and governments over the past two weeks. State governments in Minnesota and Illinois have been hit, as have the BBC, British Airways and oil major Shell.

FBI admits its network was hacked

A Russian-speaking group called Cl0p has taken responsibility for most of the breach and has promised to start releasing data obtained from affected targets if its ransom demands are not met. According to CNN, the group exploited a vulnerability in a popular file transfer program called MOVEit to gain access to its targets.

In a video released Wednesday, Russian-speaking hacking groups Killnet and REvil, along with another group calling itself Anonymous Sudan, said they would launch a campaign targeting European banks and financial institutions “Relentlessly.” The groups are said to have targeted the U.S. and other Western governments in the past, but it is unclear whether they were involved in any of the recent attacks.
