Driver who struck pedestrians outside Ozanam Center in Brownsville arrested
Seven people were killed and at least four were injured when a driver drove his SUV into a group of pedestrians waiting for a bus outside an immigrant and homeless center in Brownsville, Texas, police confirmed.
The driver, who hit the victim on the sidewalk outside the Ozanam Center before overturning his vehicle, was arrested for reckless driving and may also be charged, according to Brownsville Police Lt. Martin Sandoval. more accusations. Sandoval told local media that the collision appeared to be deliberate.
Video of the crash posted on social media showed the vehicle accelerating as it swerved onto the pavement, with most of the apparent victims unable to get out of the way. The vehicle then flipped over as bodies flew in all directions.
Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendes issued a statement saying the deceased was “Migrants staying overnight at Ozonam Center.” Although many are quick to refer to this event as “Hate Crime” Early reports suggested the driver was also Hispanic.
