Serbian troops are on high alert following clashes between Serbs and Kosovo police.
Tensions have returned in northern Kosovo — this time after police used force to allow four ethnic Albanian mayors to take office after winning local elections.
The vote was boycotted by the majority Serbs, who make up the majority of the region’s population.
There is also a geopolitical context: Kosovo was once part of the former Yugoslavia.
Now, Russia backs Serbia, NATO backs Kosovo independence, and there’s a slew of international troops.
So, what’s behind this outbreak? Will it spread?
